God Is Our Peace

Peace

Peace, as described by merriam-webster dictionary is:

  1. a state of tranquility or quiet

  2. freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions

  3. harmony in personal relations

  4. a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity

  5. used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell

Peace in the Old Testament is embodied by the word shalom (šālôm) and a Hebraic translation of the word would come back as ‘completeness,’ ‘wholeness,’ ‘well-being,’ or ‘welfare and peace.’ Shalom is best translated as ‘peace’ and when used this way means more than just an absence of war or strife but describes “a time, place and condition that features love, righteousness, calmness, political and moral uprightness and much more. It is a word reserved for those who walk with God in a positive relationship.” (HTKBW p. 135)

Before Jesus, we were literally at war with God. Through Jesus we can enter into a fullness of peace previously not attainable before Christ. This peace was made available through the coming of our Savior into the world as a baby boy.

May we be people who allow the peace of Christ to dwell more fully in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 9:6-7; Isaiah 32:17“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end…The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.”

Heavenly Father, heal our hearts during this season of Advent. Help us to love more fully. To forgive more generously. To wait more patiently for Christmas; embracing each day and hour knowing the joy that awaits. In Your name we pray. Amen.

'Peace' be with you,Chris, Lizzi, Malakai, Laila, Rhema, Moses, and Zion
